Spring Clean Sells Homes in Spokane

I remember seeing old movies in which a housewife knelt on the front stoop of her modest home. Beside her stood a bucket of sudsy water. She wielded a brush in silence as she scrubbed away that week’s layer of coal dust and grime to lessen the amount her husband and children picked up on their shoes before entering their home.

I admired those women, and I was pretty sure the interiors of their homes must also be clean and well cared for.

I’m sure I’m not alone in silently judging houses before I take one step inside. It’s human nature to judge a book by its cover.

It is 2026, and I certainly don’t expect sellers to scrub their porches by hand, but I will suggest that a quick pass with a pressure washer
or even a garden hose can work wonders. Grab a damp rag and wipe the inevitable dust and pollen off the mailbox. Use a broom to
knock down the corner cobwebs. Make sure the numbers of your house are straight and clean.

How’s the door? Could it use a wash or even a fresh coat of paint? (Do not paint the rest of the house unless it is in dire need.) If a freshly painted door is called for, don’t get crazy. Stick with neutrals, black, white, or red—a color that is naturally welcoming. Remember though, you aren’t painting for yourself; you are painting for a buyer. Lime green might make you happy, but you aren’t the target audience.

A well-placed pot of flowers, fresh bark, trimmed bushes, mowed lawns, clean windows, a new
doormat, light bulbs that work, and a secure, clean handrail will go a long way toward showing your prospective buyers that your house has been well maintained.

Do not underestimate last impressions either. A well-tended backyard can be a deal clincher.
Hose down the shed, oil the sticky gate. Get rid of the long unused doghouse. Have a pool?
Make it sparkle.

And don’t forget to tidy the vegetable garden even though nothing might be growing in it yet,
because even when we are talking about outdoor dirt, clean sells.
