Turkey Day AND the Day After
Hi friends,
Remember when you used to wake up on turkey day and, hoping no one spotted you in your robe and slippers, you braved the cold to bring in the local newspaper? You know, the Thanksgiving edition gloriously stuffed with dozens of store circulars advertising their amazing one-day, sometimes one-hour holiday specials?
Me neither. But if you are my age, your parents probably do remember.
My mom also remembers hours of pouring over those circulars to plot out the Black Friday deals for the next morning; getting up at six to make her way through the ice and snow; arriving at RiteAid during the one hour she could save $20 on a watch for one of us; racing to the mall for Macy’s next-hour deals, and so on.
She’s really thankful those nerve-wracking Friday mornings are over.
This year, our plans include the traditional turkey and fixin’s, not because they are traditional, but because they are the perfect culinary combination of wonderfulness.
To paraphrase Carrie Underwood, “Get those stretchy pants on!”
Thanksgiving really is a color-by-the-number holiday with the final picture already clearly printed on the cover of box. (Deep food thoughts right there.)
For the majority of Americans, Thanksgiving is a day to hit pause before going full speed ahead toward Christmas. Even the stores like Walmart and Target that tried staying open on Thanksgiving for a few years decided taking the day off made a whole lot of sense.
The romantic in me likes to think the heads of those companies woke up in the middle of the night realizing that feeding the souls of their employees would be so much better than padding their own pockets even more. However, the likely reality is that in the harsh light of day, their accountants presented them with bottom-line proof that paying employees time and a half, paying for heat and lights, etc… just wasn’t worth the bad press.
Whatever their reasons, I am thankful they are closed.
As for the Friday after Thanksgiving, my mom and I have the same plan…to sleep in.
