Get Lost at Hoopfest

Hello friends,

A favorite tradition of Spokanites is Hoopfest, the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world. I’d like to tell you my favorite Hoopfest story.

25 years ago, George Anderson, owner of NW Building Tech, (one of our favorite home inspectors) and his wife Patty suddenly realized that while they had been watching the basketball games, their almost three-year-old son Peter had let go of both their hands and had wandered off.

George and Patty immediately ran to a security guard, who called the security trailer, the event’s central location for locating lost children. “No,” the guard reported, “no little boy named Peter has been found.”

“Oh my God,” Patty cried, “we’ll never find him this crowd!” They continued searching for several minutes, becoming increasingly frantic. Soon, they enlisted friends into the search with equally dismal results. Over the next 20 minutes, Patty called the central location for lost children again and again. No child named Peter had been found.

Both parents were on the verge of hysteria when one of their friends suggested that Patty and George go to the security trailer in person while their friends kept up the search.

In the trailer, sat Peter. After a joyous, tearful reunion, Patty asked the security personnel how long her little boy had been there.

“Actually, he’s been here for quite a while,” the security officer said. It turned out Peter had been there since before their first call to security. “But,” the officer continued, “you asked for a boy named Peter when you called. He told us his name was Brian.”

Confused, the parents turned to their son. “Brian?” Patty asked, “Why did you tell them your name was Brian?”

“Well, Mom,” Peter said calmly, “I’ve always like the name Brian.”
