Pumpkin Soup, Anyone?
Hello Friend,
Saturday, September 7, the sun set, and the day drew a line. I’m sure you noticed. It divided the weekend into summer and fall.
Saturday, my niece Maren and my stepdad Paul swam in the pool.
Sunday, Paul lit the pilot light on the gas fireplace, and Mom pulled out the quilts.
Saturday, barbecued anything sounded better than heating up the house.
Sunday, a hearty stew or soup simmering for hours on the stove seemed ideal.
We set aside our swimsuits and pulled out our favorite sweaters; socks and shoes replaced sandals; Matt and Benson decided it was time to read the next Harry Potter book, The Goblet of Fire, together.
Matt is trying not to think about how many days his garden has to ripen before the first frost. (Interested in home gardens? Check out Dan Wilson’s video below).
In anticipation of upwards of thirty pumpkins all ripening at the same moment, I’ve requested a copy of Mom’s favorite pumpkin bread recipe. Brooklyn, our family’s cookie maker will be in charge of seeking out those recipes, and I am determined to make pumpkin soup at least a few times. Unfortunately, I’m not completely sure I’ll even like pumpkin soup. It sounds a lot like liquid squash — probably because it is — but we are eating those pumpkins in one form or another!
If you have a pumpkin soup recipe you love, I’d be thrilled if you’d sent it to me, I can’t promise I’ll also love it, but I will promise I’ll at least go into the process with an open mind and an open mouth.
I’m not a pie fan, with the notable exception of my mother-in-law’s amazing apple pie. So any pumpkin-pie construction will be a labor of love — hopefully someone else’s labor and someone else’s love.
Right on cue, Benson started talking about Halloween costumes. I may have to institute some version of my mom’s “No talking about costumes until the week before Halloween!” rule. (Of course, I’d stretch that timeframe since I’m trying to maintain my status as the fun mom.)
I know it isn’t technically fall, but when my kids are in school, it’s fall to me. Fall is also a nice season in which to buy or sell a home. The weather is just right for exploring the market or showing your home to its best advantage.
