My Grandma Maureen was born in Magherafelt, Ireland, one of 13 children, 10 of whom grew to adulthood. Her mother wanted to name her Miriam. But back then, the godparents took the newborn to be baptized without the child’s parents.

When the godparents got to the church, they couldn’t remember what name they were supposed to use. The priest, a practical man with a full schedule, declared, “The Niblocks don’t have a Mary, do they? It’ll do.”

When the godparents got back to the house and informed Great-grandmother Rose of the change, she made the best of it and called the baby Maureen, which, in Gaelic, means “little Mary.”

Saint Patrick’s Day in America means turning Chicago’s river green for a day, green beer flowing freely, leprechauns and pots of gold, jigs, and Riverdance. (I wear at least a little bit of green to avoid being pinched.)

To my grandmother, March 17 was a holy day. She never got used to what she considered “that American nonsense,” but she did wear a shamrock pin to work, and it seemed to me that her brogue became just a little more pronounced by evening.

As Irish a lass as ever there was, Grandma never actually kissed the Blarney Stone, although she did sometimes mention its notorious power. “It sounds as though he’s kissed the Blarney Stone,” she’d say. She meant that the person was lying, but not in a way that made them a bad person, just in a way that suggested blatant flattery or, at least, playing fast and loose with the facts.

Playing fast and loose with the facts isn’t good business practice.
