Spokane Strong: Before the Fires, After the Fires

I don’t think any of us can fully grasp the scale of what our city and the surrounding communities have just endured. I know I can’t. The devastation is almost impossible to comprehend.

I’ve seen the photos and watched the news coverage, but I haven’t driven through the burned neighborhoods yet. I’ll wait until it’s safe and appropriate. Even then, I know pictures can never capture the true reality of what so many families have lost.

When Everything Changes in an Instant

My own experience is small compared to those who have lost everything, but it’s one shared by hundreds of families across our region.

We had just arrived at friends’ home when the evacuation alert sounded on our phones. In a matter of minutes, we pulled treasured family photos from the walls, gathered the essentials from their safe, and left.

They were fortunate. Their home survived.

Many of their neighbors’ homes did not.

Stories That Will Stay With Us Forever

We’ve heard story after story that is difficult to put into words.

One family closed on their dream home on Friday, only to lose it in the fire the very next day.

Another friend and her husband escaped with only the clothes they were wearing and their dog. Their home is gone.

A dear relative’s house was one of the few left standing in her neighborhood, but the smoke damage is so severe they won’t be able to return home for months.

These are only a few of the countless stories unfolding across Spokane and the surrounding communities.

A Community Defined by Compassion

Most of us know someone whose life has been forever changed by these fires.

Many of you are living those stories yourself.

While there is unimaginable heartbreak, there is also something equally powerful: neighbors helping neighbors, strangers stepping in to lend a hand, volunteers showing up without hesitation, and first responders risking everything to protect lives and homes.

Spokane has always been a community filled with good people.

Over the past several days, we’ve seen that goodness on full display.

Before the Fires. After the Fires.

For many of us, life will forever be divided into two chapters:

Before the fires.

After the fires.

No one would ever choose those milestones, but the fact that so many people survived is a testament to the incredible courage and dedication of our firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency personnel, and countless volunteers.

Spokane Will Rise Again

Our hearts are broken for everyone affected.

At the same time, we remain hopeful.

The road ahead will be long, but Spokane has always been resilient. Together, we’ll rebuild our neighborhoods, support our neighbors, and emerge stronger and more united than ever.

To everyone who has lost a home, is displaced, or is helping others through this tragedy: our community stands with you.
